About FontWhirl
FontWhirl is a free website with two tools for styling text. It works in any modern browser, on phones and computers, with no account and nothing to install.
Two tools, two different technologies
The fancy text generator turns what you type into Unicode characters that look bold, cursive, gothic, circled, small, crossed out or upside down. Unicode is the standard every device uses to store text, and it happens to include many letter-like characters. Because the result is text, you can paste it into bios, posts, chats and games that have no formatting options. It is not a font: nothing is installed, and how it looks depends on the fonts of the device that displays it.
The font image generator does the opposite. It draws your text with a real typeface and saves it as a PNG image, so the look is fixed and identical everywhere. All its fonts are released under the SIL Open Font License, which allows using them in images.
We keep the two clearly separate, because they solve different problems: one gives you text that still behaves like text, the other gives you a picture that looks exactly right.
Your text stays on your device
Both tools run entirely in your browser. The text you type and the images you create are not sent to a server. The only thing the site remembers is the list of styles you mark as favorites, and that list is stored in your own browser. The privacy policy has the details.
Honest about the limits
Unicode styles do not cover every letter, some devices show certain characters as empty boxes, and screen readers and search features do not read styled characters as normal words. The generator shows when a character could not be styled, and each style page explains where that style works and where it breaks, so you can decide before you paste.
Free, and how it is paid for
FontWhirl is free to use, with no sign-up and no paid tier. Advertising may be added in the future to cover the cost of running the site. If that happens, the privacy policy will be updated first, and consent will be requested where the law requires it.
