  • Fraktur
  • Bold Fraktur

How to use it

  1. Type a word, name or short title into the box.
  2. Compare regular Fraktur with Bold Fraktur. The bold version is easier to read at small sizes.
  3. Press Copy on the one you want.
  4. Paste it into your profile, game, server or document, and check it on another device if the name matters.

Where to use it

Fraktur or Bold Fraktur?

Both styles come from the Mathematical Fraktur alphabets in Unicode, which were designed to look like the blackletter writing used in Europe from the Middle Ages until the twentieth century. Fraktur (𝔇𝔞𝔯𝔨) has thinner strokes and a few capitals borrowed from an older symbol block. Bold Fraktur (𝕯𝖆𝖗𝖐) is heavier, completely consistent and much easier to read on a phone, which makes it the better choice for names.

Compatibility notes

These are Unicode characters, not a font file. They cover A to Z in upper and lower case. Numbers and punctuation stay normal, and accented letters get a Fraktur base letter with the accent placed on top. Current Android, iPhone, Windows and Mac devices display them; older systems and some game clients may show empty boxes, and a few platforms filter them out of usernames.

Blackletter is hard to read in long text and not every reader recognizes every letter. Check a name on another device before you commit to it, and avoid gothic text for anything people must read quickly, such as instructions or contact details.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a real Old English font?

No. These are Unicode Fraktur characters that look like blackletter. They work as text in apps, but they are not a typeface. For a poster, a logo or a tattoo stencil, use the font image generator with the UnifrakturMaguntia typeface and download a PNG.

Why do some capital letters look different?

The capitals ℭ, ℌ, ℑ, ℜ and ℨ were in Unicode as mathematical symbols before the full Fraktur alphabet was added, so regular Fraktur uses them and your device may draw them from another font. Bold Fraktur has its own complete set of capitals.

Can I write numbers in gothic letters?

No. Unicode has no Fraktur digits, so numbers stay in their normal form.

Will gothic letters work in game names?

It depends on the game. Many chat boxes and display names accept them, but a lot of games limit names to basic letters and numbers and will reject or remove styled characters.

Why are some gothic letters hard to read?

Blackletter capitals such as 𝔄, 𝔘 and 𝔑 look very different from modern letters, which is part of the style. For names people need to type or search, use gothic for decoration only and keep a plain version as well.
